Natural ingredients that are great at cleaning windows

Three of the most widely used natural ingredients to clean windows include lemon juice, vinegar, and borax. These can get rid of dust, grease and dirt, which leaves you with windows that are shiny and free of smudges. Most windows can be cleaned with a mixture of half distilled white vinegar and half warm water. However, if you have very dirty windows then you may want to use 100% vinegar the first time you wash them. Spray the windows, wait five minutes, and then scrub them.

Another option is to use three cups of water with two tablespoons of borax mixed in. If you want a nice, fresh lemon smell, then you may mix in a tablespoon of lemon juice with a quart of water. Play around with a few options, see which one you like the best, and stick with it.

Some commercial cleaners are safe

If you want to stay away from chemicals but you don’t want to take the time to make your own window cleaner, then there’s good news for you too: There are plenty of commercial window cleaning products that don’t have chemicals. Look for something that’s eco-friendly and natural. You’ll find that even your local grocery store likely offers several options.

Tips for cleaning your windows

Once you’re used to following the best tips to clean your windows, it won’t seem like work at all. Here are the best tips we have available at Progressive Insulation & Windows:

  • Don’t clean when your windows are in direct sunlight.
  • Use either a microfiber towel or newspaper to dry your windows.
  • Invest in a good quality squeegee, which will give you a much better finish compared to a sponge.
  • If you’re using a solution that has vinegar, wear plastic gloves so you don’t dry your skin.
  • Carefully clean your squeegee / washcloths / sponges before washing your windows so that you’re not spreading dirt / oil around your glass.
  • Before you start, spread a bath towel on the floor to catch any drips.
  • If you’re cleaning outside, wipe horizontally. When cleaning inside, wipe vertically. If a streak shows up when you’re done, you’ll easily know if it’s inside or outside.
  • If you find that your squeegee isn’t cleaning as well as you’d like, it’s likely that you’re not pressing hard enough.
