Windows are such an integral part of your home that we recommend only installing windows that are primarily and/or neutral colors.

Do Not Go Outside of Your Budget

This advice could certainly be used for any large purchase: Set a budget and stick with it. You will find plenty of upgrades to tempt you, and they might be worth it – but not if you have to spend the next 20 years paying them off. If you walk into the buying process with a budget in mind, rather than walking in to see how much they cost first, you can stick within your budget much more easily.

Do Not Forget That Your Home Has Unique Needs

Upgrades that might make a lot of sense for another home would not make sense for you. For example, if you have a portion of your home that gets full sun then you might want different coatings than a home that was primarily shaded. If you live in a highly trafficked area and sound comes in regularly, then you might want to thicker windows that offer premium sound proofing.

Do Not Install Your Windows Yourself

Unless you are contractor with years of experience and the right equipment, it is not worth the savings you would see if you installed them yourself, for several reasons. First, it might void your warranty. Many window manufacturers only warranty their windows if they are professionally installed. Second, you might end up with tiny gaps you can’t see that let in (and out) air that will reduce your home’s energy efficiency. Get them installed correctly the first time by working with an experienced installer.
