No one wants to hear that terrible crash of a broken window, yet it happens to someone on a daily basis. While it’s not particularly uncommon, at Progressive Insulation & Windows we’ve found that many homeowners aren’t exactly what to do when it happens. We’re always here to help install new windows in your home – just call us at (800) 500-6200. Or read on to learn the first steps that should be taken.
Start by cleaning up the glass
Your first step is likely going to involve making sure that you make your home as safe as possible. Get started by moving furniture and other large items that are in the way of the window. If they have glass on them, then you’ll want to keep them covered and clean them separately.
Next, grab your broom and carefully sweep up the biggest pieces of glass. Many people try to do this step by simply picking up the large pieces of glass. Remember that it’s extremely sharp – likely much sharper than you realize. Just one small misjudgment can result in a serious cut. Always use the broom to clean up the largest chunks, and then throw those chunks away.
Once you’ve gotten rid of the larger chunks, get your broom back out and sweep the floor again to get rid of the smaller pieces of glass. Then throw them away. If the surface is carpet, get out your vacuum and thoroughly vacuum it. Make sure you put on a pair of thick-soled shoes to do this. If the floor is tile or linoleum, then you’ll want to mop it thoroughly.
If there are small crevices that are hard to clean, such as corners, try using the vacuum hose attachment. If that doesn’t work, then try a piece of duct tape to pick up the small, stray pieces of glass that are still there. As far as your furniture is concerned, use your hose attachments and / or brushes to get rid of all the glass.
Cover your empty window
If there is still glass hanging on to the frame, get a pair of heavy work gloves and remove them very carefully. If they’re stuck to the frame, let them be – don’t try to force them out. Then get a piece of hard cardboard and cut it to fit over the window. Use duct tape to get it securely in place. This will help minimize any damage from the elements.
