The Great Insulation Debate: Is Batt or Blown-In Better?

No matter what type you choose, the purpose of insulation is to bring comfort to your home all year long and to keep your energy bills as low as possible. That said, there are advantages over some insulation types compared to others. Today we are going to discuss two of the most common options: Batt insulation and blown-in insulation. Either is a great choice but one may be better for your home. Read on to learn more and then contact Progressive Insulation & Windows at (800) 500-6200 to learn more.

The difference between batt insulation and blown-in insulation

As the name implies, batt insulation comes in batts or rolls. It is made of flexible fibers or fiberglass. Fiberglass is the most common insulation material bar none, and it is made from tiny pieces of glass fiber. This is a great choice when you have an area with open or small spaces for insulation, such as between wall studs, beams, joists, etc. For example, batt insulation would almost always be used on cathedral ceilings.

On the other hand, blown-in insulation is a process of covering attic floors or filling stud or joists with loose material that has a good R-value. Just about anything can be used, as long as that R-value is high. This is a great choice for spaces that are irregularly shaped, such as attics. Blown-in insulation can fit around any existing feature of the home and it only takes us an hour or two to blow a thick blanket of insulation.

The cost of installing both options and their R-value

The exact cost of installing batt insulation will depend on many factors, such as where your home is, how much labor is required, and what special supplies may be needed. However, for the purposes of comparing the price of both options, let us consider an area of 535 square feet that needs insulation.

First, let us consider batt insulation. On average, the cost of the necessary insulation would be between $145 – $200. Then you would have to add the cost of labor, supplies, fasteners, cutters, tapes, etc. this can cost anywhere from $170 to $420. The cost of the batt insulation is generally between $0.12 and $0.16 each square foot and the prices quoted would cover a 3.5-inch barrier that results in an R-11 value.

Then compare blown-in insulation, which would generally cost between $400 and $900 for the same area. This includes both labor and materials, though the materials themselves would run between $250 and $500. Each inch of loos fill offers an R-value of 3.2 to 3.8, compared to fiberglass that offers 2.2 to 2.7 inches.
