Follow These Three Tips to Properly Maintain Your Exterior Doors

Once you have invested in a beautiful new front door, you want to keep it in the best shape possible. At Progressive Insulation & Windows we can give you tips based on the specific type and brand of door you have installed. In the meantime, check out these three tips that can help you keep your door properly maintained. If you have questions just call us at (800) 500-6200.

  1. Parts May Need to be Lubricated
  2. Look at your manufacturer’s maintenance instructions to see if there is lubrication required to keep your door in good shape. It is likely that any hardware parts, rollers, and tracks need to be lubricated once in a while. If you live close to the ocean in a salt air environment, you may need to lubricate more frequently. We recommend looking at the warranty on your doors to be sure of what is required. If you bought your windows or doors through Progressive Insulation & Windows you can also call us at (800) 500-6200 for help with maintenance questions.

  3. Follow All Manufacturer’s Recommendations for Maintenance
  4. It is wise to look at your door regularly to see if there are any issues that need to be addressed. Looking at your manufacturer’s recommendations can help you determine a schedule that will best serve all involved. If you notice that there are broken down, worn, or damaged parts then it is time to get them replaced or repaired.

If you have components of your window that are not up to snuff, they could not only be decreasing the energy efficiency in your home, but they could also be making your home less secure. Look for cracks, dents, and damage to the surface of your door. Look for moisture or fogging between glass panes. Look at your weather-stripping and caulking regularly. If it is missing, cracked, or damaged, then you should take steps to repair it as soon as you can.

  5. Adjust Screen Doors
  6. If your door includes a screen door then you can also be taking steps to ensure they are running smoothly. A screwdriver can be used in all corners to make adjustments. You can adjust the lock strike by finding the screw fasteners, loosening them, and then adjusting the strike plate to where you would like it. Then screw the parts back together and see if the lock is working correctly.

If you have an older door, that may be the simple cause of your issues. In that event it may be best to have it replaced. You can always contact Progressive Insulation & Windows at (800) 500-6200 to find out how we can help you get your new doors and windows installed.
