Everything You Need to Know About Fiberglass Insulation

Everything You Need to Know About Fiberglass InsulationIf you’ve been looking for ways to reduce your energy bills, make your home more comfortable, and increase your home’s value, then you may be considering installing or adding insulation. At Progressive Insulation & Windows, we offer several options, including a wide range of fiberglass and cellulous insulation materials. The right option for your home and project will vary based on many factors, but today we’re going to focus on the attributes of fiberglass insulation.

Fiberglass is affordable and practical

Fiberglass is made from glass fibers. These thing, light fibers are very affordable compared to some other options, and are one of the most practical options. The millions of tiny glass fibers trap air within pockets of air. This keeps heat from moving through said fibers. This type of insulation can even reduce high noise levels by absorbing sound.

The fact that it’s made from glass means that it’s fire resistant and moisture resistant. It comes in a variety of forms, including rolls and batts. It can be installed just about anywhere but the most popular places to install it are attics, crawl spaces, basements, and floors.

Understanding the R-value of fiberglass

As you consider various options within fiberglass, it’s important to understand what the R-value, otherwise known as thermal resistance, refers to. Essentially, it’s a measure of how much resistance heat would find if it tried to flow through a specific thickness. For example, your standard fiberglass batts would have an R-value ranging from R-2.9 and R-3.8 for every inch of thickness they had.

Higher performance fiberglass insulations, like a blow in the blanket system (often referred to as a BIBS), have the highest R-values that are currently available on the market. The higher the R-value is, the harder it is for heat to flow through it – which means better energy efficiency. Not everyone needs the highest R-value, it all depends on the climate in one particular place and where you’ll be installing the insulation, but Progressive Insulation & Windows can go over the options best for your specific home.

There are installation requirements to work with fiberglass

In order for fiberglass insulation to work correctly, it must be air sealed and walled in. However, while this can be time consuming for your insulation installation company, it doesn’t involve any type of drying or curing time. As a result, installation won’t bring moisture into your wall, basement cavity, or wherever it’s being installed.

Fiberglass is mold resistant

The truth is that there isn’t anything that is 100% mold proof. That said, fiberglass isn’t a food for the mold spores that can harm your health. As we discussed above, it also doesn’t absorb moisture, which helps keep your home dry. This is the exact opposite of what mold is looking for.

Fiberglass is often made from as much as 60% recycled materials and is reusable. Finally, it doesn’t give off any harmful greenhouse gases. As you can see, there are many things to recommend it.
