Special financing options can also help to make it more affordable

While rebates are great, they only help if you’re able to pay for the work upfront. For those who need help financial, HERO financing may be a good option. It’s designed specifically to help homeowners afford improvements for their homes that would improve their energy efficiency. As an added bonus, these upgrades also make your home more environmentally friendly and more comfortable.

This program is available in a number of counties and cities throughout Southern California. Essentially, it works like this: You can borrow as much as 100% of the cost of your new windows or other insulation products. The loan is then paid through your property taxes. As a result, it’s not actually tied to you – it’s tied to the property and if you sell your home it can be transferred to the new owners.
