The Best Windows for Craftsman Style Homes

One of the wonderful things about living in California is the huge variety of home types. Craftsman style homes came into popularly in the late 19th century and are most famous for their detail. They are both unique and charming, and are one of the most popular home styles in the country. Not sure if your home is a Craftsman style? These are some of the most common characteristics:

  • Covered porch
  • Single and wide dormer windows
  • Exposed beams under deep eaves on the roof
  • Low-pitched gable roof
  • Pillars that are stock, square, and / or tapered
  • Wooden clapboard siding that often has accents of stone, brick, or concrete

Choosing the best window shape for a Craftsman home

Rectangular windows work in almost any home, thanks to their traditional style. Square windows are especially lovely in Craftsman homes and are often the choice in the upper level when you want to add a little natural sunlight. Finally, eyebrow windows, which are round on top and flat on the bottom, are sometimes installed over a rectangular window or alone as their own accent.

Choosing the best window style for a Craftsman home

At Progressive Insulation & Windows we offer a wide range of window styles. The most popular for almost all historical homes are double-hung. Both panes slide up and down, which makes them very functional and allows you to get maximum ventilation on warm California nights. Multi-pane are another popular option. These are divided into between four and six sections. The lower part is unobstructed so you get a great view with these windows.

Then we have casement windows. These are the type of window where they actually operate by swimming out. Transom are thin rectangular windows that often include decorative additions like stained glass, and are typically installed over other windows. Finally, wide trim can surround even small framed windows and can be painted a different color from the window frame to add some visual interest.

Choosing the best window materials for a Craftsman home

You’ll find many materials available from Progressive Insulation & Windows as well. Fiberglass are possibly the strongest and most durable, plus they don’t require much maintenance at all. They’re also eco-friendly, beautiful, and quite efficient. In most cases, this is the option we’d recommend though we can provide you with additional options if you’d like.
