Start by finding the problem at its source

The first step to ensuring your home is properly insulated is to find the source of any issues. Even if you know that your insulation isn’t handling its duties, you need to know where the issue is and how deep the problem is. This is why you need an energy auditor like Progressive Insulation & Windows. We can discover your usage patterns, where your utilities are going, and provide a specific plan to make your home more efficient. We can also teach you about indoor air quality issues to ensure your home is properly ventilated too.

Understand the meaning of R-Value

R-Value gives you information about how the type of insultation being installed. It gives you info on how well it’s going to hold up to heat penetration, how durable it is, and how thick it is. The higher the R-value is, the better the insulation is and the more expensive it will be. Does this mean that you want to get the highest R-value possible? It’s not likely. We can let you know what the right R-value is for your home that best balances your needs with affordability.

Know your insultation options

Once you know you want to upgrade or replace your insultation, you’ll have to decide which type of insulation to add. Each one has different characteristics and some are better for one type of projects than another. The main options are:

  • Fiberglass. This material can come in batts, rolls, or blankets. In certain cases, it may be in a loose fill form. The advantages of fiberglass are that it has a low R-value, is affordable, and is easy to install. The disadvantages are that it’s vulnerable to moisture and must be installed with special equipment.
  • Polyurethane foam. This option is available in both low- and high-density options. It’s made from furniture stuffing or bedding and can be sprayed or injected. The advantages are that it’s affordable, good for tight spaces, and has a good R-value. The disadvantages are that it’s toxic when being installed and needs special equipment to be installed, so you will need to go to the professionals.
  • Cellulose. This material is made from recycled paper and goes through a borate treatment to ensure that it’s fire-retardant. It’s affordable, easy to install, and has good R-value. On the other way, it takes some time to settle, requires special equipment to be installed, and can be subject to moisture.

None of these three options are better or worse than others overall – it just depends on your home and your priorities. To get started learning about what would be best for your home, contact Progressive Insulation & Windows at (800) 500-6200 and we’ll get started right away.
