Does your door no longer open or close the way it once did?

If you are wondering if it is time to replace your door then do one of the same tests we often recommend for people considering new windows: Open and close it. Do this not just once but in different weather and different times of the day.

If the door has been damaged by water, then it will be swollen and not fit the frame correctly. If the door expands on days that are humid, then it may be leaking air, which could be the cause of higher than normal energy bills. If you heart it scraping or creaking when opening or closing, then it likely has an issue with the hinges or the fit. Try the light test

Another test that works really well is to stand next to the door and notice what you can see and fee. There should be no light coming from under an entry door – of it is then it is not sealed correctly. If you put your hand at the bottom of your door you should not be able to feel any air coming through – if you can then there is an issue with the seal.

Use the flame test

Another simple test is to grab a small lighter or candle that is lit. Hold it by the bottom of the door. If the flame flickers once it is in front of the door, then that means it has come into contact with a draft, which, once again, means that the seal on your door is no longer working correctly.

Take a look at the way your door looks

Finally, just take a moment to look at your door. Does it show signs of wear and tear? Is it obviously in need of being repaired? There are many tests you can do to see if it is standing up structurally and if it is necessary for it to be replaced but at the end of the day, the way it looks is just as an important of a reason than any other.
