Do You Have Mold in Your Windows? Learn How to Get Rid of It and How to Prevent It

Sure, mold on your windows is not pleasant to look at but it is a lot more than that – it can actually be bad for your health. This is why we want to provide you tips on how to get rid of mold if you have it and how to prevent it from happening. If you catch the mold early enough, it is fairly easy to remove and will not cause environmental damage. If you let it fester, you may end up needing new windows.

How to Get Rid of Mold on Wood Window Frames

You should begin the process of removing the mold as soon as you see it. Ignoring it can allow the mold to spread. Start with the materials you need:

  • Bleach
  • Dish soap
  • Water
  • Plastic scraper / brush
  • Dry cloth
  • Safety gear
  • Cleaning gloves
  • Eye goggles
  • Protective face mask

Start by misting the mold with a spray bottle. This helps weigh down the mold spores so that they are not free in the air as you release them. Then create a mixture of dish soap and hot water, then apply to the windows sill. The heat and soap will work together to loosen the mold. If the mold does not come up easily, use your plastic brush and apply pressure.

Follow that process with a solution of ½ a cup of bleach and a gallon of water. Put that solution on the window and let it sit for 15 minutes. Then rinse it all off with water. Dray the sills (or open the windows so they can dry naturally) and then take steps to prevent the mold from growing back.

How to Prevent Mold from Growing

Getting rid of the mold is an important step but you then want to prevent it from growing back. One of your best options is to invest in new windows. Wood windows require a lot of maintenance and are much more prone to mold than other types of windows, such as vinyl.

If you want to keep your wood windows, the key to preventing future mold is to get rid of moisture from your home. You can do this via ventilation, by keeping windows open, or by using a dehumidifier. The bottom line is that if it is not humid then the mold will not be able to grow.
