Are You Tired of Dealing with Foggy Windows? Learn How You Can Prevent the Fog

Have you noticed that whenever it’s colder outside than it is in your home, your windows fog up? Does this happen frequently or once in a while? Either way, it may be more than just an annoyance – it may mean that you’re losing energy and it’s time for work on your windows. Read on to learn more and then contact Progressive Insulation & Windows at (800) 500-6200 for help.

First: Understand the cause of the fog

The first thing to do is to gain an understanding of exactly what causes the fog. Essentially, condensation is formed when it’s colder outside than inside. To visualize this, imagine taking an ice-cold drink outside when it’s hot. What happens? The glass sweats. This is the same thing that’s happening on your windows when they have condensation. It can happen even in the summer if the humidity outside fogs over the exterior of your glass.

Tips for preventing fog on your windows

If you don’t like the fog, then there are a few things you can do to prevent it. While there are glass-related issues that may be causing it, they’re likely not the only issue. In fact, you’re likely adding to it by increasing the humidity in your home, you can do this all sorts of ways you may not even notice, like cooking, showering, or just breathing. If you can find ways to lower the humidity in your home then you can likely get rid of much of the fogging issue. There are dehumidifiers on the market that could work well for this purpose.

Glass repair may be the solution for you

If you’ve reduced the humidity in your home and the problem still persists then you likely have something else going on. If your windows are old and / or single paned, then they’re fogging up because there isn’t a buffer between the panes. This can be true even if you have older double-pane windows.

If your windows aren’t old then the issue may be caused by a broken seal. If you have windows that are old, cracked, or have simply been exposed to years of sunlight, weather, etc., then it may simply be time for new windows. It may be that you need glass repair. Whatever the issue is, remember that leaving your windows as-is does more than lower your home’s energy efficiency, it also increases the chance of your home being home to mold, allergens, and other issues.
