3 Potential Issues You Could See with Front Your Door This Winter

Winter in California may not be as serious as it is in other states but it still brings with it plenty of issues. This can be especially true for your windows and doors. Keep reading to three things you should keep an eye out for this winter. Then contact Progressive Insulation & Windows at (800) 500-6200 if you need to replace your front door.

  1. Your door could swell
  2. If you have a wooden door and it’s not been treated with a water-resistant coating, then rain or cold weather can make it swell. If you do find that your door has become swollen after a storm, avoid the temptation to open it. While you may be able to get it open, there’s a good chance you wouldn’t then be able to close it.

Instead, use a back door and let your front door dry. You can use a water-resistant wood treatment in the future to prevent this. You can also replace your door with one that’s made from materials that aren’t as likely to swell. For example, you can get fiberglass or steel doors made to look nearly identical to wood but without the swelling or warping that wood can experience.

  3. You could have water and debris gathering at your door frame
  4. When it’s raining frequently, have you ever noticed that water gathers at the threshold of your door? If so, it may make it harder for you to open the door. You could also find that it damages the structure of your door. If you’ve noticed this happening then it’s likely a sign that your door isn’t as energy efficient as it could be. Replacing the door with one that has stronger weatherproofing and a tighter seal can not only keep rain from pooling, but it could lower your utility bills as well.

  5. Your door could leak air
  6. Once again, if you don’t have a door that’s made to be energy efficient then you could be allowing cold air to leak into your home. Likewise, hot air could be leaking out of your home. Eventually this leaking could wear down your door, though it often happens the opposite way – your door leaks because it’s been worn down. The more serious the issue is, the more you’ll feel the draft in your home.

This can also cause your winter heating bills to go up. In the hotter months of the year, it’s likely you’ll see higher cooling bills as well. Replacing the door with a material such as fiberglass is a great way to help ensure your home is as energy efficient as possible.
